NaPoWriMo 2016 Entry # 5

The prompt for the 5th day of NaPoWriMo is to write a poem inspired by heirloom plants. I made the Barako, a local heirloom variety of coffee tree grown in Batangas, Philippines, as today’s inspiration. It has a very strong taste and pungent smell.

Barako is the Tagalog word for wild boar. In the early times, when there were still a lot of free roaming wild boars in Batangas, these pigs were observed to have preferred the coffee plant and berries for their food. Later on, Barako became associated with the image of a tough man.
